Facts & Figures Enschede

  • With over 160,000 inhabitants and an area of 142 km2, Enschede is the largest city in the east of the Netherlands.
  • Of the 26,000 students, 8,000 live in a student room in Enschede.
  • Enschede has more than 100 cultural, social, sports and study associations for students, who together have more than 4,200 members.
  • Since 1615, Enschede has her own brewed beer called Grolsch.
  • Enschede has more than 60 events every year, which all have very diverse subjects. Most of the events can be visited for free.
  • With the Batavierenrace, Enschede has (together with Nijmegen) the world’s largest relay race which is followed by the biggest student party in the Benelux.
  • 15 pubs are located at the Oude Markt, the most bustling square in the east of the Netherlands, but there are many things to do close to this square.
  • Many pubs and discos are open till 4 a.m. and on Saturdays even till 5 a.m. Thursday is the night students usually go out in Enschede.
  • Gay disco ’t Bölke is one of the best known discos in the Netherlands.
  • The University Campus is the oldest campus of the Netherlands. Besides living in a student room, there is a lot to discover and experience here.
  • With the Unioncard, students of Saxion and the University of Twente can do sports and cultural activities with a huge discount. ArtEZ has a student pass which provides their students discounts on shows, concerts and museums.
  • ArtEZ locations are enclosed in the name ArtEZ Institute of the Arts: Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle.
  • ArtEZ Conservatory is one of the partners of the National Music Quarter. The conservatory itself has all facilities you can think of, but also uses the professional concert halls of the Music Quarter.
